Warm, inclusive, collaborative, empathetic, kind, patient, joyful... this is how I lead, manage, and develop people and organizations. I see the potential in everyone even when they do not. My curiosity and love of learning helps me understand & appreciate everyone's role and contribution. My leadership experiences include building a company safety program after a work place fatality, navigating merger & acquisition and cultural change at a new manufacturing facility, and advising and teaching college students.
I build bridges to help people learn and gain comfort with differences and am driven by the knowledge of the mental health effects of being an underrepresented student or employee. I am open-minded and dedicated to continually learning and growing by listening to other’s stories with respect, dignity, humility, and self-reflectivity. I have created safe, compassionate, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom and research settings for difficult discussions and learning that promotes healing, understanding, and appreciation. Through my education and research, I can effectively communicate how differences matter across identities, cultures, professions, disciplines, and organizations.
Seeing the joy and excitement in people as they learn and their understanding grows delights me. Teaching, training & coaching are all variations of transforming a person's experience of the world through sharing knowledge & expertise, but in different contexts and with a variety of purposes. I taught as adjunct faculty at a premiere STEM school in Colorado. I guided & coached hourly workers who had not been in a classroom or taken a test in decades to pass their occupational safety training. As a subject matter expert I inform & advises leadership. To ensure everyone feels included I use culturally responsive, creative, interdisciplinary, and participatory methods & pedagogies to create equity in the classroom as well as the boardroom. As I life-long learner who is endlessly curious, I share my love of learning to inspire others to learn.
Diligent with an eye for details, I easily organize information, develop, and lead complex cross-functional projects. In my project management experiences in construction, manufacturing, higher education and research I have learned that rarely do things go to plan! With this knowledge I am always responsive and flexible. I have managed an interdisciplinary team of engineering faculty and students to successfully complete a mining safety research grant to completion. I managed a campus wide sustainability assessment for the Colorado School of Mines that helped them achieve AASHE Silver Status. I have created and managed safety programs from the bottom up, including composing manuals, writing state and federal compliant handbooks and training materials, record keeping, root cause analysis, and program assessments.
I have a continuous improvement mindset and understand that change is a process that takes time & must be embedded into organizational cultures & narratives to succeed. My experiences in occupational safety, environmental compliance, and merger and acquisition culture changes cultivated my ability to visualize and communicate possible outcomes and risks. I think strategically and can identify and proactively address barriers and de-railers of change initiatives.
Do you know how many minerals you consume and use? Most of us do not and to become truly sustainable requires taking personal responsibility through education and awareness for how we use the planet. Mineral & energy development are complicated, expensive, work intensive, and long-term global endeavors so making changes requires strategy & knowledge. Science communication projects like Mining for Stories are part of my long-term mission to help the public better understand how they consume the planet, and therefore how they can make changes that matter.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the ethical relationship between an organization and society. While CSR started in the mining industry in the 1990s, other entities are changing their conceptions & embracing their responsibility to do no harm. Better yet, many are now expanding how they see their relationships with communities, supply chains & vendors, their consumers & customers, but also by including environmental stewardship and diversity & inclusion as part of ethical business practices. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is an organization that supports and mentors campuses to create sustainable and equitable practices while embedding sustainability into campus life & classrooms.
My safety career started when I witnessed a workplace fatality. So safety is not an abstract concept for me, but the real lived experience from having to respond to workplace injuries and illnesses. Working in safety in three US states means that I am familiar with and can quickly learn government codes, rules, and policies as well as record-keeping, training, and assessment. Much like Diversity work, safety requires changing an organization's culture to appreciate workplace safety and embed it into the fabric of the organization at all levels.
